Or would Nina rather it was Supernatural?

Let's talk about this overrated show turned manga that features a gay protagonist and his harem that he disses for his best friend and enemy a teenaged protagonist who starts a war to make the world a better place for his little sister and acquires a geass and a pizza hut-loving squatter who does not seem to know that it is not good to use other people's …

PostSubject: Dracula   Fri May 27, 2011 5:48 pm

Discuss the classic vampire story by Bram Stoker here.

My most favorite book. Give this vampire story some love, twihards. Without this, I personally do not think vampires would be all the rage, really.

So anyways, summary time~
Spoiler:

Trivia:
Transylvania is somewhere in Romania.
Dracula's name comes from the Romanian word for devil, hell or dragon, dracul (see the consistency?
Transylvania is a real place and there is a tourist attraction there which is called Bran Castle or Dracula's castle although no actual proof states that Bram Stoker even knew about this place.

Characters:
Jonathan Harker
Count Dracula
Three vampire women
Wilhelmina "Mina" Murray-Harker
Lucy Westenra
Mrs. Westenra
John "Jack" Seward
Quincey P. Morris
Arthur Holmwood (Lord Godalming)
Renfield
Abraham Van Helsing

Heh, I should really get around to reading books. Dracula is interesting. Classics are always the best.

Hm, really. Twihards? Hmph, I seriously doubt there'd even be Twilight if there wasn't Dracula. This classic set the whole vampire thing into motion, in my opinion.

...Now I'm starting to wonder where the concept of "Alucard" came from. Yes, it's Dracula backwards.

Dracula is very good. I agree. Hell, I have 20++ of them already with me. *I noticed I keep typing tagalog. mfw I really replied in tagalog*

Like I said, Dracula set the motions of vampire stories. Sure, there were already some, but most things people know about vampires come from Dracula.

Which Alucard? So many Alucard.

Fuck yes, Dracula.

Lol, like crucifix beats vampires, vampires can shapeshift, eucharist beats vampires, vampires cannot enter a person's house uninvited, garlic is not liked by vampires, vampires control wolves, stake through the heart and head off = way to destroy them, were popularized by this.

Lol, I remember Sir Rai's Alucard genes or something like that.

What about the no reflection thing? And... holy water? Besides that and what you said, I can't think of anymore popularized vampire 'traits'. Of course, besides drinking blood. Well, more like sucking.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot the no-reflection thing. I think Holy Water is too. Apparently, Van Helsing is catholic, so yeah. Though wiki says Harker was Anglican but started shifting to Catholicism after the rosary protected him from Dracula somehow. I didn't mention but When Mina picked him up, he was in a convent.

Oh, and the 'burns under the sun' one. And maybe by extension, the 'burns whenever in contact with blessed/holy objects'? Also what about turning into ash?

Vampires in Dracula can walk in broad daylight. NO SPARKLES. But seriously, they can. That is one myth that was not made popular in Dracula. In fact, Harker literally sees Dracula walking amongst the people in the afternoon. Van Helsing said, iirc, they sleep in the morning/daytime because they are powerless. The blessed/holy stuff is present in Dracula as Mina's forehead gets burnt went Van Helsing puts the eucharist onto it. The turning into ash stuff, iirc, only happens when they have been ages dead. Dracula and the 3 women vampires did. Idr if Lucy did. If Lucy did turn to ash, then all vampires do. If not, just the centuries dead ones.

Hm, I did recall seeing a vampire who doesn't burn in daylight, they become weaker... or powerless. I don't remember. Well, I guess the more famous one is where they burn and stuff. Sparkles, however is whatisthisIdon'teven. Seriously. Good thing I haven't seen that in action.

Weaker and powerless are somewhat synonymous in terms of them, ja? Yeah, the burning part is more famous. Maybe because it shows a weakness? Iirc, in Sims 2 vampires die in sunlight. In Sims 3, they just get dazed and faint and have extremely sunburnt skin.

Sims have vampires? I didn't know that. I'm guessing they have other creatures too?

Good thing they don't sparkle in Sims then. Seriously, was that ever explained?

Yes, they do. Sims 2 has Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Plantsims, Robots/Servos, aliens, ghosts, etc
Sims 3 has mummies, ghosts, vampires, simbots and imaginary friends.

Yep, I agree. I don't know. Speaking of sparkles, they can get bishie sparkles. :3

Nope just sparkles for being an "eye-candy".

Anyways, back to Dracula, you should try reading it, too.

Heh. Sure, why not. If I find the time to, then sure. I wouldn't want to borrow a copy from you though. You might eat me. And I know you wouldn't let me anyway.

Eh, I probably would let you. So long as you do not open it wide and crease its spine. Very Happy
To be honest, from Fhudge, there are a very select few whom I will not let read my books. If you ask in ym, then I will answer.

No thanks. Heh, I can pretty much make guesses.

What's the best... version of Dracula? Which one tells the story best, I mean.

Best version? I dunno. There are abridged and unabridged versions, you see. What I have is an unabridged version (that's why it's bible thick) that was slightly revised for ages 9 and above. Or maybe 12 and above.

If you can, tell me the names in ym.

..So that's why. Then that means you've read both abridged and unabridged versions? Is the story telling consistent? Well, I don't really mind as long as they get the important facts straight.

I dunno. I only have the unabridged. Well, I'm not sure what gets cut but they're usually still in tact. Though it does make me wonder how they introduce Renfield.

Neutral Seward goes on about his patient Renfield. The early ones have him eating flies. Putting sugar on his window pane to attract flies. Then he asked for a spider. Spider ate the flies. Then he asked for...birds? I'm not sure. Well, the highest he got was up to one cat. Then, Seward will imply that he ate the cat. So, I don't know how abridged series will go on about that. Especially the for kids versions.

You just read what I read about Renfield. Iirc, Para-medic mentions that to Naked in the jail cell and if you exit the game, that's when you get the mini-game. But what she said exactly, I don't remember.
